HubSpot Solutions Partner or Independent HubSpot Consultant: Which Should a Startup Hire?

How a HubSpot Solutions Partner agency and an independent HubSpot consultant differ, and which one fits a startup sales team.

For a startup with one sales team and a clear first build, an independent HubSpot consultant usually fits better: you work directly with the person doing the build, the scope stays tight, and you can scale the work up or down month to month. A HubSpot Solutions Partner agency fits better when you need several skills at once, such as marketing, web, content and service, or a rollout across many teams. A partner tier tells you an agency sells and manages a lot of HubSpot. It doesn't tell you who will work on your account.

What a HubSpot Solutions Partner is

Solutions Partners are agencies in HubSpot's partner program. They appear in HubSpot's Solutions Directory, and their tier reflects how much HubSpot business they manage for clients, along with certifications and reviews. Many partners also resell HubSpot licenses. The strongest ones bring a team with specialists in marketing automation, websites, sales and service.

What an independent HubSpot consultant is

An independent consultant is one experienced person, or a very small team, who designs and builds HubSpot directly. There's no account manager in between. Good independents hold current HubSpot certifications and have done the same kind of build many times. I work this way: I'm an independent consultant, not a listed Solutions Partner, so weigh my view with that in mind.

When a Solutions Partner makes more sense

  • You need marketing, website and sales work done at the same time
  • You're rolling HubSpot out across several teams or regions
  • You want one vendor accountable for HubSpot licenses and services
  • You need coverage that doesn't depend on one person's calendar

When an independent consultant makes more sense

  • One sales team of roughly 10 to 50 reps needs pipelines, automation and reporting set up properly
  • You're moving from Salesforce and need someone who knows both platforms
  • You want the person who scopes the work to be the one who builds it
  • The work comes in bursts: a launch, then lighter monthly support

Questions to ask either one

  1. Who exactly will build our portal, and how much of their week goes to us?
  2. Which HubSpot certifications does that person hold, and are they current?
  3. Have you set up HubSpot for a sales team our size and in our kind of business?
  4. What do we own at the end: documentation, a field list, training recordings?
  5. What does support look like after launch, and how do we end it if we need to?

The answers matter more than the label. A small team at a top-tier partner can be excellent, and so can an independent with the right experience.

Where to find each

HubSpot's Solutions Directory lists partners by tier, location and specialty. Independents are easier to find through referrals from other founders, your investors' platform team, the HubSpot for Startups program, and marketplaces such as Upwork. If your company runs on Salesforce today, look for someone who has built in both systems, because the migration decisions matter as much as the HubSpot setup. My HubSpot consulting page shows how I work with startup sales teams.

FAQ

Do I need a HubSpot partner to buy HubSpot?

No. You can buy HubSpot directly and hire any consultant to set it up. A partner can also sell you the licenses, which some companies prefer to keep with one vendor.

Is an independent HubSpot consultant certified?

The good ones are. Ask for their HubSpot Academy certifications by name and check the dates. I hold the HubSpot Marketing Hub Software, Sales Hub Software and Inbound certifications.

Can an independent consultant handle a Salesforce integration or migration?

Many can, but not all. Ask how many Salesforce to HubSpot projects they've done and what they rebuilt, not just what they moved.

Can we switch from a consultant to an agency later?

Yes, if the setup is documented. Ask for a field list, workflow notes and admin access from day one, so anyone can pick it up.

What should a startup set up first in HubSpot?

Deal pipeline and stages, required fields, lead routing, and one dashboard leadership trusts. What to look for in a HubSpot consultant and what drives HubSpot implementation cost go further.

If you're deciding between the two right now, tell me about your setup and I'll give you an honest read on which fits.
